이재명 더불어민주당 대표 국회 체포동의안 가결(지난 21일)이 내년 총선 판도에 미칠 파장을 두고 국민의힘 내부에서 손익 계산이 분주하다. 민주당 내 이탈표로 확인된 내분의 씨앗이 향후 새로운 민주당으로 발아할지,여당총선변수에고심쇄신한민주당과대결준비해야 외려 반대급부로 ‘이재명 일극 체제’를 가속할지 예단하기 어려워서다.

당장 26일로 예정된 이 대표에 대한 법원의 구속 전 피의자 심문(영장실질심사)이 첫 변곡점이 될 것으로 보인다. 그 결과에 따라 국민의힘 입장에선 내년 총선 카운터파트가 ‘이재명의 민주당’일지, 아니면 ‘새로운 민주당’이나 ‘분열된 민주당’이 될지 일차로 가늠해볼 수 있다.

국민의힘 주류에선 “이 대표가 총선까지 당내 영향력을 미칠 것”이라고 보는 전망이 많다. 여당 지도부 고위 관계자는 “이 대표 체포동의안이 가결되면 민주당 지도부가 전원 사퇴하고 쇄신의 길을 택할 것으로 예상했는데, 오히려 비명계인 박광온 원내대표와 송갑석 최고위원이 사퇴해 나도 놀랐다”며 “이를 봤을 때 앞으로 민주당은 이 대표의 구심력이 더 강해진 당으로 내년 총선을 치를 가능성이 크다”고 전망했다.
